Camp Coaches e-mail Information

Dear Volunteer Coach:

Thanks for volunteering.  Without your help we would not be able to help a mob of kids become much better basketball players.  What we do will determine their future love of basketball.

The camp core hours are from 9 to 4, though we have the gym open and supervised from 8:30 to 5. (The 4 to 5 time period ‘babysitting’ in the hall with whatever campers remain, as the custodians are forcing us to be out of the gym by our actual booked time which is to 4:00 pm.)

I have attached a copy of the coaches’ handout.  (See below this e-mail letter for this handout).  Please give it an overview read.  It will give you a good idea of some of what will be happening in the camp.

Guest coaches have been scheduled for all of the learning times in the camp.

The coaching job is meant to be fun, and will be fairly simple once you become familiar with the camp procedures.  Your coaching responsibilities are to primarily relate to the kids.  There is at least one coach for every seven campers, so the work load should be manageable.

DON’T BRING MONEY OR VALUABLES.  The change rooms are not secure.

Finally it goes without saying that swearing, hitting, horseplay, bullying and name calling are strongly dealt with in this camp.  Time outs to correct this are used liberally if such behaviours are observed.  Also please remember at all times that you are a role model for the kids and they will pick up on your behaviours quite readily.

I really look forward to working with you. Thanks for offering to help.

Sincerely

PatS.

Youth Lay-ups:

R = Right

L=Left

H=Hook

B = Base Line

C = Centre

Day One          Simple R, C & L (encourage use of left hand where appropriate)

                              Have each team run in 10 Lay-ups per person at their own end

                              Keep and show Stats

                              Dribble in to do Lay-up

                              Individually at side baskets, coach kids needing help to do lay-ups

                                       on the run

                              Half way through time period show stats (optional)

                              (Keep these stats for Day 5 comparison.)

                              Encourage/Push for performance excellence, i.e., lay-ups made

                              Team Stats can be compared on the number of misses vs the

                                       number made.

                              Re-do, emphasis getting them in with concentration.

                              No pressure to use left hand on Day 1.

Day Two         Add fakes (jab step and crossover fakes) to start of Lay-ups

                              On fakes work for people protecting the ball on their hips

                              Add C Lay-up (shooter should be encouraged to veer R or L to

                                         make shot)

                              Out loud count number made in a row

                              Pit teams against each other as to which has greatest number

                                       (for each type of Lay-up)

                              Make it fun.  Keep, post and show stats.

Day Three       Do all 5 types of Lay-ups (R, C, L, Baseline Rand L sides)

                              Tell them that the team with the best percentage in will get a candy

                                        per person

                              Ensure fakes are done properly

                              Keep, post and show stats.

                              Give candy each player on team with best percentage in

                              Can add Hook from left side so hook is done right handed

                        Added Reward: For each time everyone in a row, scores the lay-up, give the team a single candy for each team success.

Day Four        Do all 5-6 types of Lay-ups

                              Change dribbling in approach to having the rebounding line pass the

                                         ball (this pass may be a simple flipping of the ball) to the

                                         player going in to shoot.  (Make sure fake occurs before

                                        shooter runs in.)

                              Tell them that the team with the best percentage in will get a candy

                                         per person

                              Ensure fakes and ball protect are done properly

                              Keep, post and show stats.

                              Give candy to each player on team with best percentage in

Day Five         Repeat Day 1 so we can compare stats and register improvement

                              Repeat Day 4's procedure of the rebounder handing off the pass.

                              Can add checker swatting at ball that swings toward checker.  (If

                                         you do this make it fun and also teach the players to put their

                                         shoulder into you to protect the ball as they shot.)

Monsters Lay-ups:

R = Right

L = Left

H = Hook

B = Base Line

C = Centre

P = Power

Day One     Do 5 lay-ups of each type

                        Types of lay-ups to do - R, L, C (over rim, right and left side –

                                 15 centre lay-ups),

                        B and H (both R and L sides) - total 9 different lay-ups with each

                                  person having done 45 lay-ups in the end

                        MUST use left hand when appropriate

                        Have each team run in Lay-ups at their own end

                        Keep, post and show Stats

                        Fake (jab step or crossover using alternate pivot feet) & dribble in to

                                  do Lay-ups.

                        Ensure ball protected on fakes

                        When done show stats (Keep these stats for Day 5 comparison.)

                        Re-do lay-ups encouraging/pushing for performance excellence,

                                   emphasis getting them in with concentration

                        Team Stats can be compared on the number of misses vs

                                   the number made.

Day Two     Do all 9 types of lay-ups again – 5 of each type per person

                        Add in the teaching of the R & L power (P) lay-up,

                                    making 11 types of lay-ups

                        Out loud count number made in a row

                        Pit teams against each other, which has greatest number for

                                    each type of lay-up

                        Make it fun.   Keep and show stats.

Day Three Do all 11 types of Lay-ups - 3 of each type per person

                        Push group to go quicker (basketball’s a fast game)

                        Add in teaching Under lay-ups on both R & L side, making 13 types of lay-ups

                        Tell them that the team with the best percentage in will get a candy per person

                        Change procedure to using Pass-Pass approach to running Lay-up

                        Ensure initial passer fakes before running & hand signals for return pass

                                    to Lay-up.  Have call “BALL” too.

                        Encourage lead passes, i.e., pass to where the man is going to be

                        Keep, post and show stats.

                                                Give candy each player on team with best percentage in

                        Added Reward: For each time everyone in a row, scores the lay-up, give the team a single candy for each team success.

Day Four     Add H and B from both Rand L sides

                        Continue to use pass-pass approach to running in 13 different Lay-ups

                        Ensure passer fakes before running and hand signals for return pass

                        With R, L and C drives gently harass the shooter.  (Make this a fun

                                     challenge, not torture for the shooters.  Stress ignoring the

                                     harasser.  Focus on scoring only)

                        Look for ball that swings toward check and swat it away.  (Teach

                                     players to turn shoulder of non-shooting hand into check to

                                     protect the ball

                        Keep, post and show stats.

                        Give candy each player on team with best percentage made

Day Five      Repeat 9 types done in Day 1 so we can compare stats and register

                                      improvement

                        Do 5 lay-ups for each type as you did on Day 1 with no

                                      harassment...then

                        Repeat Day 4's effort and make harassment more fun.
