In 1998, when this survey was done, 54% of Canadian children ages 5 to 14 regularly took part in some kind of organized sports activity.

Percentage figures do not add up to 100 due to multiple responses.  For example, about half of all active children participate in more than one sport.

  Parents:  In the summary about the above information Statistics Canada said,

"If a family provides a supportive environment for athletic pursuits, children are more likely to take part than if the family does not.  Children who come from families where parents are involved in organized sports as athletes or volunteer administrators are significantly more likely to participate than other children."
