Erin Hoops

Rules Of Play

With the following exceptions Erin Hoops adheres to all the normal basketball rules:

v Zone Defense - Zone defenses are not allowed and only man to man defense may be played.

v Fouls - Players can not foul out of a game. Coaches and referees are to monitor the number of fouls and overly aggressive players are cautioned about their play.  Having a player sit out a shift is a good way of curtailing fouls.  If a player is fouled during play the referee shall award the ball to the team fouled.  If a player is fouled in the act of shooting but no basket is scored the referee shall award one point to the team fouled and award the team fouled the ball at the nearest sideline.  If a basket is scored and the player shooting is fouled in the act of shooting the basket counts and the referee shall award an additional point to the team fouled.  (Erin Hoops equivalent of the 3 point play.)  The ball goes to the defensive team.  3 point shot - there is no 3 point shot in Erin Hoops until players are in the oldest (+13) age division.

v 3 seconds in the key - the 3 second violation will be enforced in the oldest  (+13) age group. It is to be gradually introduced in the younger divisions.  The main focus here is on the player with the ball.

v  Full court press - full court press is not allowed.  On a change of possession in the fore court the defenders must drop back to behind the centre line.  After a basket the team scoring must drop back behind the centre line.  In the oldest age division the coaches may agree in the later half of the year to allow full court pressing to occur.

v Timeouts - There are no time outs during games.  Coaching is to be done when the players are on the bench between shifts.

v Playing time - ALL players are to get equal playing time.

v Length of games - games are approximately 45 minutes in length, divided into two equal halves.

v    Half time - 2 minutes in length.

v    Clock - a clock is used to time the shifts.  Shifts are 3 to 5 minutes in length as agreed on by the coaches.

v    Scoring - a running score can be kept for each game.  Currently we rarely keep score. We play for the fun of the game itself.  Individual player totals are not kept.

v    Standings - no standings are to be kept.  (Hoops fosters a non-competitive atmosphere.)

v    Foul shots - foul shots are not taken during the game. However, at the end of the game each player shoots one foul shot.  A made foul shot counts one point and is added to   the team score.  The foul line is moved closer, according to each individual's ability.

v    Jump Balls - a jump ball is used at the start of each game and each half.  In all other jump ball situations the ball is awarded to the defending team.

v    Game Stoppages - the game may be stopped periodically by either coach to allow on the floor instruction on how to play the game better.

v    Jewellery - Erin Hoops specifically requires that everyone playing basketball refrain from wearing watches, rings of all types, bracelets, necklaces, etc.  This is a safety precaution to reduce anyone getting hurt.
