A) one for even younger youth wanting to try the skills challenge using a size 5 ball and shooting from 12 feet (not the regular 15 foot foul line). and... B) one for the rest of us older people to test our skills too. (These attempts will also be posted on the wall in a separate area.) |

Competition Diagram

1. Opening Lay-Up (from START SPOT) - minimum of one (1)
or maximum of three (3) shot attempts.
Participant may only advance to next skill after a made shot
or after three (3)unsuccessful shot attempts.
(Time starts on Starter's "GO." Participant advances
basketball to lay-up by dribbling.)
2. Shot from Foul Line- minimum of one (1) or maximum of three (3)
shot attempts.
Participant may only advance to next skill after a made shot
or after three (3)unsuccessful shot attempts.
3. Speed Dribble - begin by rounding yellow cone to the right and continue weaving through entire set of cones to PASSING SPOT.
4. Pass and Receive Basketball - with at least one (1)
foot on PASSING SPOT
pass the basketball to the passing coach and wait for return
chest pass from coach.
5. Speed Dribble - begin by rounding yellow cone to the right and continue weaving through entire set of cones.
6. Final Lay-Up - minimum of one (1) or maximum of
three (3) shot attempts.
Stopwatch is stopped on mad basket or after 3rd shot attempt has been RELEASED
from the participant's hands
Competition Rules
The basketball goal will be 10 feet in height.
The participant must start with both feet ON the start spot.
Participants must start on Starter's "GO" (or whistle). The Starter will use a pulsed "Ready...Set...Go" cadence.
One(1) false start will be permitted. A 2nd false start will result in Disqualification. (See Disqualification below.)
Participants must advance the basketball throughout the course by dribbling.
Participants may shoot using any technique desired.
There is a one (1) shot minimum and a three (3) shot maximum on EACH shooting skill (opening lay-up, shot from the foul line and final lay-up).
Participants may ONLY advance to the next skill from a shooting skill after a made shot or after three (3) unsuccessful shot attempts. (See Violations below.)
Shot from the foul line must be released from behind the foul line. (See Violations below.) After the release, landing on or in front of the foul line is permitted.
Participants must rebound their own shots. If third (3) foul shot or third (3) initial lay-up rebounds outside yellow cone at Speed Dribble 3, then player must retrieve ball and dribble correctly around the right side of the yellow cone.
Participants must round both yellow cones to the right. Failure to do so will result in participant repeating the entire set of cones.
Participants must weave through each orange cone. A kicked over cone is permitted, provided that the participant correctly weaves/rounded that cone.
The participant must have at least one (1) foot on the passing spot when s/he passes the ball to and receives the ball from the passing coach. A two second (2:00) violation will be added if at least one (1) foot does not remain on the passing spot during this skill.
Participants may pass to the passing coach using either a bounce, chest or over-head pass.
No out-of-bounds.
Appropriate athletic footwear is required. Only soft-soled shoes and/or shoes in accordance with the facility guidelines are permitted. NO open-toes shoes allowed.
Each participant receive only one (1) non-practice attempt to complete the challenge.
Participant is disqualified if all six (6) skills are not completed in sequential order, as shown in the Competition Flow Diagram above.
Violations
A two second (2:00) penalty will be added to
participant's final time for each of the following violations:
All rulings made by Court Official are FINAL.
Traveling
Palming/Carrying the ball
Advancing from a shooting skill before a shot has been made or all three (3) shot attempts have been taken
Shooting the foul shot on or in front of the foul line
Missing an orange cone
Passing AND receiving the basketball without at lest one (1) foot on the
passing spot
Disqualification
Two (2) false starts
Missing one(1) of the six(6) basketball skills or not completing the course outlined in the Competition Flow Diagram (in white above), in sequential order.

Competition probably in Toronto in March or April 2008. (Our 6 Local
Competition Champions will be in the running to advance to the Regional
Competition...BUT...please note, champions' times will be compared to other
Local Competition Champions in our NBA market and ONLY the top four (4)
finishers in each age and gender group will advance to the Regional
Competition. The JrNBA/JrWNBA Skills Challenge Headquarters will contact
each first place winner in early March to notify you of your advancement.)
